Whitby

With its skyline dominated by the ruins of St Hilda’s Abbey and labyrinth of narrow alleyways, Whitby possesses old world charm. Climb the one hundred and ninety steps from the old town and you’ll arrive at the churchyard of St Mary. Other delights include the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, located in the seventeenth century harbourside house where he served his apprenticeship.

Filey & Malton

Our day begins in Filey, a former fishing village rich in heritage and home to a variety of seabirds as well as Edwardian architecture, quirky shops and an intriguing museum. After time to take in its charms, we move on to the market town of Malton – known as Yorkshire’s Food Capital thanks to its big reputation for all things food. Browse the independent shops or visit the archaeological museum. Perhaps hop on the local bus to the award-winning Eden Camp Modern History museum which is set on the site of a POW camp and where you can experience the sights and sounds of war time Britain.

Tiny Rye is located at the confluence of the rivers Rother, Tillingham and Brede and its harbour area is a nature reserve and a magnet for birds. Perhaps visit the town’s thirteenth century castle known as Ypres Tower and where you’ll find a medieval garden and an interesting museum. Maybe head to the National Trust’s Lamb House, the onetime home of literary great, Henry James or just wander around the beautifully preserved dwellings dating from the Middle Ages. Later we call in at Bexhill-on-Sea, a seaside resort with beachfront cafés, a gently sloping beach and a wide promenade – the perfect place to laze on a sunny afternoon.

Worthing & Shoreham-by-Sea

Lancaster
Lancaster’s landmarks include a gothic revival cathedral, the Grade I listed priory and the Georgian townhouse known as the Judges Lodgings. Enjoy a stroll along the meandering towpaths or browse the quirky shops. Don’t miss the foreboding castle, a mighty fortress with origins dating all the way back to the Romans and where you can delve into England’s dark past. One of the UK’s most significant historic monuments, this fortification has been a hotbed of witchcraft, religious persecution, crime, punishment and incarceration. Try out a medieval cell for size and view one of Europe’s most extensive collections of heraldic shields.

Southport & Botanic Gardens
Explore Southport’s landmark pier and the marine lake, relax on the sandy beach, meander along the promenade or browse the shops in refined Lord Street.
